Post Wedding Vacation

When you are waiting for your daughter’s wedding for eighteen months you tend to put a bunch of other things off. Russ and I did not really celebrate my birthday or our anniversary at the time last month. So we planned the celebration to be post wedding. I also wanted to have something to look forward to after the wedding so I could postpone the let down.

Yesterday we had our final breakfast at the Norembega in Camden. We said our goodbyes to the girls and the family and we drove to Quebec City. First a word about the Norembega. It was the most perfect place for the wedding. The people who run it are top notch. The rooms are all spectacular and the food is to die for. They just received a Michelin Key, which is a big deal, and well deserved.

Now, on to Canada. The drive from the mid coast up through the Kennebec river valley was boring, but pleasant. Coming into Canada was easy. And rural Canada was much nicer than rural Maine. Canadians tend to not have lots of junk in their yards, unlike American rurals.

We are staying in the upper city of old Quebec. It is very touristy, but not in a Myrtle Beach kind of way. The diversity of people is fantastic.

This morning we got up early and drove out to Montmorency Falls. They were not as impressive as I had been led to believe, but we had a nice walk and cable car ride. It was nice to have a 14,000 step day with 18 flights of stairs climbed.

One thing I love to do when we go to a different country is going in a grocery store. We stopped at an IGA near the falls and it was huge. Two big differences were the tartare bar in both the meat and seafood departments and the gallons of milk that came in bags. I need to research how it is stored and served.

After the falls we wanted to go to the lower old town. The funicular that gets you down the hill was being serviced. A ranger told us it would come back online soon, but we could walk down the stairs to get there. That seemed fine as long as we could take the funicular back up.

We ate lunch on the umbrella cul de sac and did a little clothes shopping. When it came time to get back to our old town we discovered the funicular was still not working. Thus the 18 flights of stairs.

Russ and I rested after that a bit and then went back out to do a little shopping and have dinner near the Chateau Frontenac. Tomorrow is a big holiday here in Quebec. We are not sure what we will see, but it will be interesting.

We sent the girls a photo of the two of us captioned, “What 34 years looks like.” THey sent us one back from Nantucket, “What Three days looks like.”
