Auction Day

One of my favorite Maine activities is going to Bruce Gamage’s August Auction. Over the years I have gotten so many fabulous things from Bruce. My biggest issue is getting things home to North Carolina. If only I owned a house here I would buy all my furniture at action because the most gorgeous antiques go for nothing these days.

The mid coast has lots of people with fabulous estates full of great art and over time they eventually need to liquidate after the children and grandchildren children have taken all they want.

Today there was a big estate of an avid art collector. One of the pieces he had was an early Jackson Pollock. It had a big tear in it, but it had never been restored and it has all it needs to be restored now. The estimate on it was about $10,000 and it ended up going for $36,000. It was a fun auction to witness.

I bid on a few things, mostly bidding things up for Bruce. But I won a pair of fabulous frames that I can’t wait to take home and figure out what to put in them. I may have to show them to my mother first and see what she might create for them.

I couldn’t stay for the whole auction because Russ has a colleague visiting and I had to get home to drive everyone to dinner. We took him to Claws of course and he had his first lobster role. The best way to introduce someone to Maine.
