Riding the Wave
Posted: March 24, 2026 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a commentI opened my email this morning and the above the fold, number one story in the Boston Globe was “Why is Everybody suddenly playing Mahjong?” (Spelled not the right way.)
You would not know there is a war on and gas’s is up over 35%. But it’s true, suddenly everyone is playing. For those of us who have been playing for decades, we just wonder what took the rest of you so long. Welcome to the party.

One of the people quoted in the Globe article is Alix Bryant, the owner of American Mah Jongg, a web based mah Jongg business that has a great newsletter. I just recoded a class for her last week and she is a delight.
When I got home from teaching tonight, Russ said that Kara Swisher’s pod cast today started off with her talking about just learning mah Jongg. So it’s officially everywhere.
People used to ask me how long I was going to teach mah Jongg and I always said, “I’m riding this wave as long as it lasts.” The wave just keeps getting bigger. That means it won’t last forever, but I have been at this almost three decades and it hasn’t ended yet.
