Anne Lamont with Kate Bowler, Live

Weeks ago my friend Sara invited me and Lynn to go to see Anne Lamont be interviewed by Kate Bowler at the Carolina theater. I was thrilled it was for tonight since it was my one day at home before I’m off for days and days.

Sara picked us up and we went to Pizzeria Toro for a quick dinner with the dozens and dozens of other women who were also there before the show. So wonderful to have that time to catch up before we walked around the corner and took our seats. We saw a number of other church women from Westminster there too. No surprise since Anne Lamont is a frozen chosen too.
Kate Bowler is a very good host. She opened the show with an excellent monologue and spilled the beans about a new book she has coming out in April, Joyful Anyway.

Anne Lamont was a joy. One thing that struck me was she said, “We think we are hungry for what we are not getting, but we are really hungry for what we are not giving.”
I hope that this Live event will be broadcast as a podcast because Anne read a poem that might have been called “gate A4,” by another writer whose name escapes me now and I would like to reread it. She also sung the praises of a writer named Maggie Smith, not the dame. It all went by too fast and I couldn’t take notes sitting in they dark theater without annoying other people with the light of my phone. I am so used to watching, listening, or reading something and being able to stop it and rewind and rewatch it, relisten to it or reread it. Doing it live is just harder these days. It means I just have to reread some Anne Lamont as well as Kate’s books.
Hey, Dana! I just tried to leave a comment, but I’m not sure it posted. In case it didn’t, I wanted to say that the poem Anne Lamott read had to have been “Gate A-4” by Naomi Shahib Nye. Lamott refers to this poem a lot in interviews.
Always good to read about your adventures!
Your old friend,
Frances Dowell
