Pick A Peck

That Peter was on to something. When he was sent to pick a peck of peppers it was not a hard job. Peppers are prolific.

When we left for Maine I told my friends to pick my garden to their hearts content. My favorite was my friend Carolyn’s four year old granddaughter who has been visiting my garden annually. She is an intrepid veggie eater and love peppers.

This was the quote from her granddaughter that Carolyn sent me.

When Russ and I got home our fig tree was stripped clean and not a fig on the ground. That was hundreds of figs I was happy people could enjoy.

My peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and zucchini had been well harvested. I was thrilled that the veggies did not go to waste. I just left my aging plants in the garden, ignoring the need to rip out the spent plants.

Today was the perfect day to go clear the garden as it was cool and dry. Before pulling out the plants I had to harvest what little was left. A few small green tomatoes and a couple of ripe tomatoes, one tiny eggplant and hundreds of peppers. Those pepper plants gave and gave and gave. They would probably keep producing until a frost if I were to leave them, but there is no need as I have more peppers than we will need.

One thing that was unexpected were two pepper plants I bought at the farmers market which turned out to be not at all what they were advertised to be, so I have some white and purple peppers. I won’t be pickling those.
